FILIPINO BOXING POST PACQUIAO: KEYS TO SUCCESS

1.   The conditioning regimen of Filipino boxers from the Philippines must be improved.

How many times have we seen talented Filipino boxers be given opportunities to display their skills or fight a ‘known’ fighter only to fall short at the end due to their poor conditioning.  Most of the time, the conditioning can be attributed to the work ethic of the fighter; but when it’s consistently a problem and not attributed to just one boxer, then the conditioning regimen must be evaluated.

Losing to an opponent because he was better or more skilled might be easier to accept than losing due to poor conditioning.  These young Filipino boxers have had to sacrifice a lot of things, which include being away from their families and should be given the best preparation before their bouts.

2.  The trainers must be evaluate teaching methods and provide Filipino fighters a more versatile game plan.

When watching many of the Filipino fighters from the Philippines today, it seems that fighters from certain boxing stables have similar styles.   From the outside looking in, one can reasonably assume that fighters are being pigeonholed to a specific style.  It might assist the fighters attain some level of success but it might not necessarily be conducive in maximizing their talent and athletic abilities

Sometimes it is wiser to suit one’s training methods to a fighter’s own style and physical abilities.  Manny Pacquiao is considered one of the best boxers in history and a great percentage of that can be attributed to the guidance of Freddie Roach.  But what is overlooked is how Roach never changed Pacquiao’s style.  Instead, he polished his skills and added techniques to further enhance the effectiveness of  Pacquiao’s agressive and unorthodox style.

Also, there have been numerous fights involving Filipino fighters, where they were clearly winning the early rounds only to lose when their opponent adjusted to what they were doing earlier in the fight and they failed to do the same.  The trainers must create a more creative game plan that includes multiple strategies depending on the adjustments made by the opponent.

3. The people who are responsible for managing the young and talented Filipino boxers should place more importance in those decisions that can affect their careers positively in the long term.

In many cases, young Filipino boxers are rushed to take advantage of the rising Filipino market in boxing.  In the short term, the boxers and their handlers can quickly make a paycheck.

But is it beneficial for their career in the long term?

Remember Fernando Lumacad, who fought Jorge Arce.  He was outclassed and completely dominated.  What is worse is that most people perceive him now as a ‘quitter’, even though he was put in a position where the outcome of the fight was to be expected.  Bernabe Concepcion also had a fight with Steven Luevano and was disqualified due to a late hit.  He was successful in first couple of rounds, but became frustrated when the Luevano adjusted and started controlling the fight with his jab.

The problem is many times such as the case for Lumacad and Concepcion, is that they’ve never been with any notable opponent prior to facing Arce and Luevano respectively.  They had never even fought a top ten contender before facing the fighters mentioned above.  Young fighters must be put in the best position to win, and pitting them against elite opponents without preparing them properly can most often than not affect their career negatively.

4. Young Filipino boxers should be brought along slowly, but at the same time pitting them against fighters that will help them become prepared in future fights against elite opponents.

This includes not padding their record by constantly feeding them journeymen fighters, washed up Thai champions and fighters, whose styles are tailor made for them.

Fighters must be brought up slowly, but the quality of their opponents should also improve in each of their succeeding fights.  They should be pitted against fighters of different styles so they can learn to adjust independently inside the ring.

Another important fact that must be considered is to let the best Filipino fighters fight each other.  One of the main reasons that many young prospects from the Philippines have not attained the success once envisioned for them is the lack of quality of opponents in their resume.  How can one maximize his potential when he doesn’t fight the best?  Today it’s rare for a Filipino fighter to fight another Filipino fighter of equal talent.

You will never see a Bernabe Concepcion vs. Rey Bautista because their handlers want to build them up and doesn’t want them to face another high profile Filipino prospect because it might hinder them from getting a chance to fight abroad.  In the short term, a greater number of hyped up prospect will receive the chance to be fight abroad and in front of a wider audience, but if they keep achieving only a level of mediocrity, the interest from promoters abroad will soon subside and Filipino boxers might fall again into obscurity especially after Pacquiao retires.

It is a sorry situation in all of philippine sports.
comprised of corrupt officials and members, shrewed promoters and undisciplined fighters, and manlolokos you name it we have it in bulk talking to all sports ask most of our athletes and you will hear the same complain

  8. Zans Says:

i think its arce not montiel who knockout lumacad then after the fight ask arce’s autograph. What a shameful act a boxer with an inferiority complex. Lumacad shouldnt be fighting outside the Philippines anymore. Its not only training and conditioning they develop they should also develop the attitude or mind conditioning. filipino boxer should have a little just a little arrogance and believe on themselves. Btw Instead of basketball, give the biggest budget on boxing.

  9. Jerry Saniusi Says:

Good article!!! Thanks for helping the Fil. boxers..hope they are listening.Blessings to you!

  10. ENTRADERO Says:

THEY NEED GOOD NUTRITION AND MOST OF ALL, DEDICATION AND DISCIPLINE. THEY NEED SPONSORS THAT CARES MORE TO THEIR BOXERS THAN LINING THEIR POCKETS.

  11. don Says:

I think your wrong Emilio!! Philippines would not have gotten 7 World titles in 2009 if Filipino’s followed what you said!!! I say keep fighting their best with the world’s best. They will make fame and fortune for the Philippines and even with the loss can still make alot more money then if they fought in the Philippines and with that money hire better condition coaches and better trainers. EMILIO YOUR WRONG!!!If pac didnt go abroad and fight Elwabe with only a 2 week notice and beat him badly he would still be fighting in Philippines making barely enough to live. I say give these talented Filipino’s a chance to fight abroad! FAME & FORTUNE AWAITS. Also look what Pac has done with his money build hotels, golf courses, stores, restaurants to provide more work for Filipino’s and more tourism to Philippines because he is such a generous guy and love to help his country very much!!! Only way to make it in boxing is take big risks. Yeah you say fight in Philippines and pitt the best with the best their but unfortunatly losses diminish their chances to fight champions in USA. Look what Floyd said about pac as an excuse “He lost 3X ” He opt to fight a undefeated unknown Mexican fighter instead(forgot his name).

  12. lakersdabest Says:

@don…when pac fought ledwaba he was already a proven champion with a legitimate belt under his resume…he had also won the wbc international super bantamweight title and the opbf flyweight title…and he fought tough opponents…thats the difference…pacquiao had a solid resume and career before facing ledwaba…he was prepared already to face someone of ledwabas caliber…some of this guys have never even fought anyone notable…they are talented but their careers are not properly cared for…yeah they can make money by rushing this kids…and make 10 thousand and then lose and they are never heard of again? u think their handlers will support their family? why not handle their careers correctly from the beginning and have a long successful career…pacquiao was not an overnight success…he worked hard for everything he got…he paid his dues

  13. Siciliano Says:

good message , average article, just one footnote… Watch the Luevano vs. Concepcion fight AGAIN! are you crazy? concepcion was dominating Luevano during the whole fight,CLEARLY.. the punch that he threw was halfway to luevanos face when the bell rang and even then concepcion managed to put a brake on the power of the punch.. if that never happended you wont be seing luevanos name anywhere right now, and they would have a rematch that would go to concepcion again…and thats word

  17. rocknrolly Says:

well done! good work! i like this

  18. boxing analyst Says:

Manny’s boxing stance shows that he’s always prepared for toe-to-toe boxing, while Floyd’s stance tells that he’s prepared to block all your punches with his ‘pillow’ gloves, turn his body sideways with both hands close to the body effectively reducing his opponent’s hitting ratio, and those two-fisted arm-blocking maneuvre for more blocking & potshotting, and last but not the least his ’smiling’ tactic whenever got hit flush on his face to give a wrong impression to the judges that he’s not even hurt, thus misleading the fight’s decision. don’t forget the running though, by using to his advantage the size of the ring where he could run around. but more, he’s prepared to hug his opponents if needed to, plus those upper body movements in lateral & vertical movements..its really difficult to deconstruct how FLOYD fights, seems like the size of the ring is too big for him or that 12 rounds of wasted time is not enough to end a decision. Conclusion: Manny is a fighter, Floyd is a coward

  19. DDMANA Says:

Filipino boxers are very good as I have known them since my early age. However, it is true that they lack good trainers. Managers greed is always a big factor in the training and conditioning of this fighters. Managers want their fighters to fight early on championship matches even though this young boxers are not well trained and conditioned

  20. onetwelve Says:

    Agree..Agree..Agree!!!

we need better nutrition, improve conditioning and increase quality competition. This is something that the SMART led amateur boxing association of the Philippines is doing and hopefully from the amateur ranks to the professional level this can be done.

  21. skreech Says:

hayaan nyo na ang pag hingi ni lumacad ng autograph he was just idolizing a fighter as a boxer ayaw yo pa nun kahit undefeated si lumacad that time at sa ibang bansa na sya lumalaban pero down to earth parin sya. i appreciate nyo ang humiity nya. di pwedeng makuha sa tapang/pride lahat ng bagay.

  22. fokai Says:

Good article Oliver. I see that some filipino fighters are not seasoned enough fighting outside of the P.I. Fighting with different fighters in the U.S. will make them even better. Having more experience of fighting different styles will make them succeed.

  23. royce Says:

Excellent article. Keep up the good work.

  24. jonathan Says:

our filipino boxers are good but it seems that they are lacking of good conditioning, most likely the ALAH boys fighters from boom,to z gORRES watch them how they loose stamina,so to speak managers, and their teams are not well done in handling our fiighters.nor lacking the ingredients to have a much better preprations.

  25. stok Says:

    Emilio Aguinaldo,
You said, “They had never even fought a top ten contender before facing the fighters mentioned above. Young fighters must be put in the best position to win, and pitting them against elite opponents without preparing them properly can most often than not affect their career negatively.” You’re contradicting your statement. You want them fight top contenders but you don’t want them to fight because they’re not prepared. As a boxing expert, you know that to get a fight with top fighters you’ve to earn it, right? Oftentimes, it’s luck and connection in order to get it. Even among the top fighters, it takes a lot of negotiations and even to the point that top fighters never fight against each other until they retire. Clottey is one lucky top caliber fighter to get a fight with Pacquiao. There’s no one rule in becoming a great fighter. If you’re destined to be great because you’ve the gift and luck you’re side then you’ll gonna make it. Don’t tell me that all our good fighers didn’t do their best or are lazy. You’re right you need the best trainer to be good fighter but it’s not even a guarrantee because many fighters lost fights even the Great Roach was their trainer. Pacquiao comes in once in a century and I think you still don’t want to believe it. Even Roach believes that despite Pacquiao’s awkwardness and unscientific style. Tell me one boxer that became great because of these crude techniques? Pacquiao is the only one.

  26. perry ayos Says:

Emilio, an unsuccessful premature foreign invasion of our kabayan fighters does not indicate lack of capability or lack of proper training. They lose because it was just not their night. Could you imagine what the Mayweathers would say if all those promising Pinoy fighters easily win for the first time abroad facing elite opponents. A demand for rigorous blood testing for Filipino boxers coming in to American soil will be an understatement. Grabbing the first opportunity is one step closer to fulfilling one’s dreams. Unfortunately not many are lucky especially if they are foreigners. But still a good experience and a learning tool.

  27. El Caviteno Says:

Good intention for filipino boxers. Training on an extreme level is very significant factor to become successful boxer like Manny Pacquiao.

  28. Hitler Ampatuan Says:

Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. Recent invasion of our compatriots in Dubai was a success and Boomboom Bautista was one of them. He apparently learned from his lose in U.S. soil.

  29. Burton Hayne Says:

I think Chuck Liddell is the best mma fighter in UFC history. Nobody will be as great as him!
