PATIENCE AND LUCK BRING ‘MONEY’ FOR MOSLEY

At this time last year, Shane Mosley sat atop the welterweight division. He was coming off his dominating ninth round knockout victory over Antonio “Hands of Plaster” Margarito and big money fights should have loomed on the horizon.

At (then) 37 years of age and with his best days possibly behind him, “Sugar” went out in search of the huge money fights to round out his career. His shortlist of opponents included Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Many boxers have expressed their desires to challenge Pacquiao and Mayweather, and why not? Both are cash cows and their opponents are likely to earn a career high payday. Mosley, however, is one of the few that has earned the right to face either man.

Before Pacquiao’s bout with Cotto was finalized, Mosley tried desperately to get Pacquiao to share the ring with him. He originally balked at a catchweight bout at 143 pounds, which may have cost him the chance. By the time Mosley offered a straight up jr. welterweight bout, it was too late. Terms for Pacquiao’s eventual brutal beating of Cotto were already finalized.

After Floyd Mayweather cruised to an easy unanimous decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez, Bernard Hopkins convinced Mosley to go Kanye West on Mayweather’s post-fight interview to challenge him to a fight. Mayweather famously brushed off the challenge to hunt down bigger paydays.

Mosley eventually found a willing dance partner in WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto. Mosley and Berto quietly trained in the shadows of the failed negotiations of the Mayweather-Pacquiao mega fight, only to have Mosley’s first fight and decent paycheck in over a year turn to dust in the wake of Andre Berto’s withdrawal after the earthquake in Haiti.

Mosley, fortuitously fell into Mayweather’s lap. After relatively easy negotiations and an unnerving week in which Mayweather balked at signing his end of the contract, Mosley finally gets his Money fight.

Shane Mosley is known as something of a ‘nice guy’ in boxing circles. He tried the nice route with Pacquiao; it didn’t work. He stepped outside his comfort zone and tried to bully Mayweather into stepping into the ring with him; it didn’t work. He waited patiently and took the challenge of an up and coming young champion, biding his time until Mayweather and Pacquiao’s respective schedules opened up. In the end a little bit of luck, coupled with waiting his turn in line have brought Floyd “Money” Mayweather to Shane Mosley.

By the time May 1 rolls around, Mosley will have had 15 months and 1 week out of action. Mosley is traditionally rusty when fighting after long layoffs. Most believe Mayweather is fighting a shell of the good Mosley. Mosley is looking to prove the doubters (me included) wrong, and crush Mayweather before moving on to challenge Pacquiao.  Will his efforts prove futile, or will Nazimm Richardson put Mosley on the track to Pacland?

This is going to be a good fight. I can’t wait I’m excited. I like both boxers, I love Mosley but Mayweather will win this fight.

I wish it were April 29th right now. This fight makes me forget about Pac and Clottey. What an abortion.

  2. haywire48 Says:

IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE MOSLEY VS PACMAN, THESE TWO ARE FIGHTERS NOT PRETENDERS

  3. Kawilui Says:

I hope Sugar Shane will kick Pussy boy Floyd Gayweather fagget ass so he and his filthy mouth father will shut the fuck up… I’ll put my money on mosley in this fight… If ever it happens, did vagina boy gayweather signed the contract? He might duck again and as an excuse ask mosley to get a mammogram or some sort of Olympic style drug test…

  4. Leon Kilat Says:

Floyd will pull out of the fight with Mosley.

  5. jorge Says:

    pacquiao-mosley is great matchup.,

  6. brinz Says:

I know this is boring fight. Floyd will run until the end of 12 rounds while mosley’s tank will be empty because of chasing of the bigmouth gayweather. Take a look to JMM fight, floyd will not engage into toe-to-toe fight eventhough he is heavier, taller, and a has a reach advantage than marquez.

  7. Jepoy Says:

I hope gayweather comes to fight and not run in the ring with shane..shame on him:-(

  8. Jake Jimenez Says:

Tim, no amount of patience would have allowed Mosley to dump the Berto fight because it was already a done deal. Lucky for Mosley, Berto had to hightail it to Haiti. Again, lucky for Mosley an alreay panicking Team Mayweather was out of Pacland and in Limboland looking for an opponent to match Team Pacmans “Event”. Now, Mosley needs just two more lucky spells, He’s go to be lucky another time around to be able to beat Mayweather convincingly, with emphasis on convingcingly to make another fight possible with no less than the number one man Pacquaio. These are four episodes of luck Tim. Mosley needs two more. I bet you my running conditioned volswagen beetle Mosley ain’t going to be that lucky unless his back to juicing.

  10. cyro Says:

Mayweather agreed to fight Mosley to get out from the critics from thousands if not million boxing fans saying that he is ducking best fighters in boxing. If mayweather loss this fight he loses 40M because pacquiao will fight Mosley.

  11. cyro Says:

There is 50:50 chance that Floyd will pull out, and you are right Leon… Maybe after Pac and Clottey fight Mayweather will finally decide to consider facing Pac and leave Mosley.

  12. NEW ERA Says:

If Mosley-Mayweather fight will be shown at the same date and time with Pacquiao-Clottey, I will choose The Event because this is a real fight involving a topnotch welterweight in Clottey trying to upset the most exciting fighter and #1 P4P fighter Pacquiao. These are both brave warriors. Shane vs Floyd is an excellent match up though but this might end boring considering the fighting style of Mayweather. Let us also accept the reality that this is an elimination fight to settle for the P4P supremacy against the real and officially recognized #1 Manny Pacquiao.

  13. tony Says:

I beg to disagree, Tim, concerning Mosley balking at a catchweight bout with Pacquiao at 143 lbs. I have read many news reports that Mosley was even challenging Pacquiao at 140 and claimed 140 won’t be a problem getting down to it.
The rest of your article is accurate.

  14. NEW ERA Says:

Considering the fact that father-time is fast approaching Mosley, I doubt if he can pull an upset. I always put Manny Pacquiao as the lone fighter to end the zero mark of Mayweather but because of Mosley’s invincibility as we saw how he demolished Margarito, I give him the chance of an upset only by knock out. It’s very difficult for him to win by the score cards.

  15. ardinpadua Says:

its not patience, but desperation, would mayeather fight mosley 7 years ago?

  16. Cabby Says:

To some boxers, 37 is pass their age, but there is a lot of them who even at 45 are still capable of defeating younger boxers.Yes, Floyd could do his floating like a butterfly but can he sting like a bee? I don’t believe he can hurt Sugar Shane. Floyd may be so clever and slick, yet we saw that a slower than him, boxer/pucher, Castillo, did hit his mark and some even thought that Floyd lost in that fight. I am for Mosley in this fight.

  17. alex of canada Says:

mosley will crushed mayweather… just like margarito.. he will kissed the canvass! im 100 percent sure!

  18. sonnym Says:

after the pacquiao fight debacle…floyd has nowhere to go than fight the guy whom he ducked years ago or else he is the pound for pound boxer who intimidates lower weight champs.this is is not the true test of an all time great.history will judge floyd as a boxer who has the potential but never tried to be in the best league of PRIZE FIGHTING. poor floyd, the hell with legacy!

  19. ardinpadua Says:

Now its either fighting blown up featherweights or fighting old guys, thats Floyd’s legacy, I still wonder why people pay to his fights. Ill wait to see the fight on free TV or in you tube. I sure hope do hope Shane beat the crap out of this guy.

  20. iamdodi Says:

PACQUIAO VS MOSLEY ONLY !!!! THERE WILL NEVER BE A PACQUIAO VS MAYWEATHER

    ACCORDING TO SCOOP MALINWSKI

Floyd Trying to Talk His Way To Victory Over Pacquiao
Published by Scoop Malinowski on February 17th, 2010

But the little-known truth is, Mayweather advisor Al Haymon’s associate George Peterson told me the decision to cancel the Pacquiao-Floyd was made as far back as early December – obviously, because Team Mayweather concluded a boxing match against Manny Pacquiao was a “no win situation.”

  21. iamdodi Says:

    ADDENDUM

mayweather pushed into fighting sugar shane.figure it out, mayweather vs mosley will make more money than mayweather vs marquez but
    but
    but
    but
weather floyd fought mosley 3 years ago or now, it still be the big megafight money same split..yet floyd did not take the fight.why? scared of sugar shane thats why.BELIEVE ME FLOYD IS TRAINING HIS HARDEST NOW FOR MOSLEY THAN ANY OTHER BEFORE

  22. BoxingHistory Says:

So much hate for Floyd. It’s like damn if he do damn if he don’t. Floyd is going to box Mosley’s ears off then the next thing we will hear will be how the killer Mosley who slayed the beast Margarito got old over night. You can’t have it both ways. Mosley is great now so let him stay great even after he loses.

  23. ernie Says:

My psyche power is telling me that Floyd Mayweather will be losing to Shane Mosley. I can see it. Its is all because of bad karma on the part of the Mayweathers. Good luck to both figthers.

  24. boxmeister Says:

This fight aint gonna happen folks…Floyd Jr will think of something between now and May 1.
I pity Mosley for landing on a contract meant not to be made. The chicken will always be a chicken, got cornered, nowhere to go, but will think of something to appease his fanatics.
Pac versus Shane will be the real deal.

  25. BNME Says:

Floyd has never been beaten Mosley has. Floyd is the better fighter he wins. Also against Pacquiao and any other fighter between 140 lbs - 154lbs

  26. chauncey_xyz Says:

THIS WILL BE A BORING FIGHT! BECAUSE MAYWEATHER IS A FAST CHICKEN! AND HE IS GAY BECAUSE HE LOVES TO HUG MEN!

  27. Duckweather Says:

I want Mosley to win to completely shut-off the mouth of Mayweather Jr. Mayweather never respect his opponents so he does not deserve respect too.

Just one loss for Mayweather and he totally lost his worth…

It will be more exciting to see Pacquiao-Mosley match than Pacquiao (P4P King)-Mayweather (P4P runner and elbow king)

  28. Reno Says:

@tony, the author got it right initially Shane wanted the fight @147. Shane’s reason was well he fought Oscar at 147 why can’t we fight at 147 for my belt. Once team Pacquaio elected to negotiate with Cotto Shane change his tune and was willing to drop to 140 for the fight.

  29. juniedv Says:

can mosley e-f-f-e-c-t-i-v-e-l-y cut-off the ring with a boxer of mayweathers caliber? and therefore “trap” fraud to force him to engage? those are the two most important questions for this fight.
for mosley to be able to do so, requires the correct game plan, talent and fortitude.
with richardson and shane’s desire to be the third “real” sugar in boxing, i’m guessing YES mosley wins through a big upset.
and on to the real fight with pacquiao.

  30. Steadfast Says:

When the fight comes nearer, Floyd Mayweather will try the following to withdraw the fight due to nervousness:

    1. Floyd is sick
    2. Floyd had an accident
    3. Floyd will retire due to infection
    4. Floyd’s hand is broken

If the fight will continue due to his pride of ducking the best fighters, Mosley will expose his weaknesses. I can see Mosley jabbing all night long causing Floyd in retreat mode hiding his chain with his broad shoulder rolling in lateral position and Shane will take this opportunity to attack and hit the ribs…At the end, it is a rib injury….This is Floyd’s habit where he can’t punch during this mode…..

Mosley by TKO in 7th round.

  31. bolo punch Says:

the key to the fight is pressure, all-out pressure and for the full 12 rounds. if he can do that and land very telling shots, he just might have a chance. pbf will mostly likely run his way to a decision though.

  32. mrRomero Says:

I don’t like Floyd. And for him to get his butt kicked by Mosley, I’ll be happy to see. However, I noticed most guys keep saying Floyd will eventually back out of the fight with Mosley. First of all Floyd Never in his career backed down or pull out from a fight after publicaly accepting or announcing it, LET ALONE after the contract was signed. This only happen once, with Pacquiao and it was PAC who pulled out. NOT FLOYD. So to try and play it like Floyd does it all the time makes no sense.

  33. boxingfan Says:

I wonder what would happen if Pac wins vs Clottey and goes to Vegas and watch Mosley/Mayweather fight in person. Will he bring some distraction to Floyd???

  34. Siciliano Says:

I like shane as a boxer but the excitement level on this fight when the bell on the 1st round rings will be………..just…………………………..BLAND…
heres the summary… backward ice skates..chase..chase..jab..philly shell…ice skates …philly shell… ice skates..jab..philly shell.. and it goes to the scorecards! by split decision… zzzzzzzzz

  35. mrRomero Says:

Bob Arum can hand PaC fans a class of MUD and say…. “here drink this wine, it’s delicious”…. and most of you die hard Pac fans would drink from that glass without hesitation.

    That’s the Pac vs.Clotty fight…MUD.
Pac is going up against a punching bag.

Oh, I forgot it’s Joshua Clottey. A natural 147 tuffest challenge yet for Pacquiao. ok then he’s a punching bag full of bricks. But he’s still a punching bag.

  36. Siciliano Says:

Mr.Romero is the punching bag…Bag Full of Sh!t.. Mr. Romero is #1floydfan’s butt buddy! He talk a lot of smack like he could take on somebody like Joshua Clottey.. dimwit!

  37. Siciliano Says:

Funny how Mr.Romero puts an analogy like that about PAC fans… when he’s one of the elite bird brains who shouted Manny’s on A-side meth! when roger came out with his dumb a$$ statement! these guys are Pac haters that is obsessed on going to PACLAND everyday of their lives..hahahaha…pathetic..sad theres no Prettyland for PBF..so you suckas are basically homeless! jerk buckets!

  38. Home of the Brave Says:

We all have the responsibility to protect the innocent, that is why we have an international saying “innocent until proven guilty”. A non-action doesn’t necessarily mean they are guilty. When people say, what about Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, they forget…just because they didn’t say or admit anything…there is a smoking gun and whistle blowers….and evidence. A least there are actual witness and they are sworn. Manny however, there are no whistle blowers or smoking gun. The only source of this accusation came from a person who is one of the worse people of character. Floyd Sr. There is no evidence, link, or proof Manny has taken any PEDs. All it is a hunch and gut feeling. Floyd Sr is still bitter because the way Hatton was demolished/KO by Manny in second round, the fact that Manny’s game plan for Hatton was perfect and it wasn’t all about Manny’s great boxing skills. It was a combination of both: great skills and great game plan. People give a lot of credits to Manny, but they should also understand the person who trains Manny and develops and designs the game plan, is considered right now as the best in boxing business. So it is not all about Manny’s extraordinary feat, but his ability to follow a great game plan from the top trainer in boxing today. Freddie should be given equal credit to Manny’s success. The PED that Manny took is not Performance Enhancing Drugs but Perfectly Executed Design.
FYI. Philippines is known to having full of extra-ordinary people. It’s beyond comprehensible to learn from the fact that After All These Years (by Arnel Pineda of Journey) there are still people like Mayweathers who don’t know how to write a Note to God (by Charice Pempengco) and here comes Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao an extra-ordinary fighter says Mayweather, Jr., which by the way one of the greatest compliments I have ever heard from a CHALLENGER to a CHAMPION.

    Manny rocks the world.

  39. Badong Says:

Mosley better get Floyd, Jr. knocked out or beat him up convincingly because he will get the short end of the stick if the fight is close. GBP and HBO are still salivating at the Pac v. Money fight and they don’t want it derailed by Mosley. Ditto Top rank with Pac v. Clottey fight. These people are going to move heaven and earth to preserve that prospect and that means by all means possible, to the extent de la hoya, Schaefer and the Mayweathers jump inside the ring to gang up on Mosley if they feel Money is losing the fight.

  40. Antonio M Says:

Don’t count your chicks yet until the eggs have hatched, Shane. Not until mayweather actually climbs up and faces you in the ring, until then don’t count on mayweather showing up to fight you.

  41. ray williams Says:

The only reason mayweather is taking this fight is because he has no other choice. He has to fight shane mosley because he is beginning to get negative backlash from the public. Mosley is well passed his prime but he isnt shot. Im giving mosley an edge in this fight because i know deep in mayweathers heart he didnt want this fight. I believe mosley is hungrier, he wants it more. And i also know mosley isnt fighting just for money. When all is said and done and mayweather, pacquiao, cotto, ect ect hs retired mosley will still be making money with golden boy prod. mosley is fighting for legacy and that makes him dangerous.

  42. Gayweather Says:

Floyd “Malcom Xylocaine” Mayweather Jr. - The next Malcom X

  43. el diablo Says:

To MR. SHANE MOSLEY: GBP will try everything to make FLOYD defeat you. Be careful of what you eat and drink before the fight. Don’t trust anybody during the fight. Good Luck to you.

  44. steve Says:

I already put $ on Shane, but NOTHING will shut the Mayweather clan up

  45. Gambino Says:

Mosley will win this one. Mayweather’s stock will go down. Mosley can take Mayweather’s punches. Mosley is not JMM. He is much bigger and stronger and he has a great chin. I can’t wait to see Pacquiao fight Mosley.

  46. Vice Says:

Mosley is in trouble. He’s fighting the number 1 in America, Number 1 law breaker in America! Drug runner, user, rumor mongerer, gun trouble, women beater, molester & insane. They should be in jail, not making internet circus!

  47. jsb Says:

To all Pacquiao fans Boycott Gaymayweather fight. Don’t buy PPV on his fight..

  48. cmmon' now Says:

***Obviously, Pacquiao did not want to play Mayweather’s kind of game. Besides, he can afford to not take the fight at all because his earnings already dwarfs that of Mayweather. Aside from being a great athlete, he is also a better person than Floyd is. Remember Floyd’s troubles from the law stemming from domestic violence (2002) and misdemeanor battery of two women (2004)? That tells a lot about the character of the person. That is why I was not surprised at all when he started those insinuations against Pacquiao. In addition, Floyd is having trouble with the IRS. Which leads me to ask Floyd the same obvious question: How come you wasted $40 million by not fighting Pacquiao? Given Floyd’s reputation of ducking good fighters, the answer is a very obvious one.***

I am a Pac fan… here is my message to Shane & PBF fans.

To Shane fans…I want to see Pac-Shane fight! Both fighters will look good fighting each other. But Shane needs to win BIG on May 1! So brutal MUST Shane win that PBF wouldn’t want a rematch. Just my 2 cents.
I will be rooting for Shane during the fight ’cause he is a classy guy and the odds doesn’t favor him. But I hope to see Shane’s guard high and tight. Apply pressure like he never done before. And to crowd PBF wherever he goes, then blast PBF during in-fighting with those short and powerful haymakers. PBF is open for those left straights to the body. Bust PBF up really good…. now I am getting excited.

I think a lot of PBF lover is missing the point here… Great Champions are remembered by their struggles and triumph over adversity. People see the Great Champion through the quality of opponents. What is it to debate here? Pac is a Great Champion. Pac is the first fighter in boxing history to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions. Pac was never accused of ducking. Pac has fought more champion-quality than PBF. Google PBF and ducking and you will have a lot of hits. PBF is synonymous to cherry-picker boxer. Pac resume speaks for itself. Just my 2 cents.

  52. JMay Haymon Says:

Floyd Money May Jr is the greatest a$$ whooper of all time. Never duck anybody! The man is fearless!

WELL I’LL WAIT TO SEE THE FIGHT IN YOUTUBE!.. MAYBE BE ON MAY 3 OR 4,2010!…
    IN HIGH DEFINITION SCREEN!HAHAHA…=)

MOSLEY VS. FLOYDY BOY THE “XYLOCAINE BOY”!…

ONE THING WILL HAPPEN AFTER PACQUIAO-CLOTTEY FIGHT : FLOYD AND MANNY IN COURT!WAHAHA!…=)

ARE YOU READY FOR “BANKCRUPTCY” FLOYDY BOY THE “XYLOCAINE BOY”!….
    BETTER BE!!!!!…..

  55. redbull Says:

I can not believe that floyd will fight shane not until after the bell rings for them. This is just a poker game match up to intimidate forthcoming manny vs clottey fight.Panglawgaw lang .

  56. mrRomero Says:

Floyd will knock Mosley out. And it will put him back at the Number One Pound for Pound.

Pac will beat Clottey and the tale of the fight will show it was a mismatch to begin with.

  57. phiripin-jin Says:

According to mrRomero PBF will KO Mosley? How? When? What?… PBF will those brittle hands will not KO any sturdy fighter.

Are we talking about Sugar Shane here, a guy whose never been KO’ed… or different Mosley guy???

  58. Victor Brooke Says:

Floyd was forced to fight Mosley after his dumb, idiotic moves on Pacquiao. Didn’t he just stated last yeat after he beat Marquez that he will not fight Mosley because he is not a PPV draw and he has 5 losses? Floyd is a pathetic liar with big insecurity issues.

  59. MANNY PACYOU Says:

boxers versus puncher is a great fight

    skills versus brawler !!

  60. mrRomero Says:

Phiripin says. “Pac has faught better opposition than Floyd Mayweather”

This is what I’m talking about..this is a clear sign of a Pac lover. Not a boxing fan. Floyd has faught bigger names in the sport than Pacquiao. And…he’s beat them convincingly. (except for Castillio..Floyd lost that 1st fight with him).

Pacquiao is being messured by fighting….Oscar De Lahoy (drained and a part time boxer)….Ricky Hatton (who was KO’d by floyd when he was undefeated)….Miguel Cotto (drained to catch weight and was already damaged goods).

Floyd’s career is full of boxers who didn’t have these descrepencies. All of pacquiaos fights have practically been with cripples.. And he’s also ducked Mosley, Berto, Margarito, Paul Williams just to name a few.

Pacquiao is a FAKE and a PED user. That why he won’t and never will subject himself to random testing.

  61. Kulafo Says:

KFC Floyd should start campaigning for his 2019 fighter of the decade because he just lost to Pacquiao in the last decade. Lil Floyd might get his 3rd fighter of the year too by fighting an old man. He should continue on fighting small and washed up fighters so he could be a 7 time champion in 7 divisions too.

  62. Christinna Says:
