WILL PACQUIAO’S “GOLDEN” STRATEGY BE SUCCESSFUL AGAINST CLOTTEY?

Once again, Pacquiao is set to face a ‘high risk’ opponent in Joshua Clottey.  As expected, he is fully focused on the fight and doing well in training since he had kept himself in shape.

In an interview with Lem Satterfield for Fanhouse.com, Roach showed confidence in his fighter and predicted that Pacquiao will be the first one to knock out Clottey.

In the same article, Roach provided a hint on what strategy might be utilize in the fight against Clottey.  Roach alluded that they plan to use angles and movement to confuse the challenger en route to a convincing victory in a fight that might mirror Pacquiao’s fight against Oscar.

Joshua Clottey is a big welterweight with solid skills and might prove to be a tougher challenge for Pacquiao than Oscar based on his youth and size.   They are completely different boxers, but both do share similar traits. Much like Oscar, Clottey needs to get his feet set in order to throw punches and that will be difficult when Pacquiao rarely stays in one place and will throw punches in the midst of darting in and out and side to side.

In addition, similarly to Oscar, he has a tendency to be too passive as far as throwing punches is concerned and that can spell disaster against an aggressive and athletic fighter such as Pacquiao.  That’s one of the reason that I always thought Pacquiao had a great chance in beating Mayweather Jr.

You cannot rely too much on defense and throw only one or two punches at a time when fighting Pacquiao since he’s not your typical ’slugger’.  He’s extremely athletic and his fast twitch muscles allow him to put himself in a great position to throw his patented hooks and straight lefts very quickly.  That was one of the main factors in the fight against Cotto.  The Puerto Rican found it difficult to time Pacquiao when the latter simultaneously jumped while throwing punches because of the explosive manner that he does it and thus found himself defenseless from Pacquiao’s constant assault.

Also Clottey does not use his height to his advantage most of the time because of his tendency to fight in a crouching position with his head forward.  So he will be vulnerable to Pacquiao’s counter punches the same way De La Hoya was.

It looks like Coach Freddie ‘Nostradamus’ Roach might again be proven right as Pacquiao’s seems to be headed to another ‘Golden’ victory. This fight will certainly be entertaining as both fighters are expected to fight, but Clottey’s skills aren’t versatile enough to upset the Pacman unless he tags him with an unexpected power shot.  Of course the ‘expected’ doesn’t always happen in boxing, which was the reason most of us still watched Floyd’s fights against low risk opponents and the same reason most of us will watch this one.

There shouldn’t be any doubt about who will win this fight. Almost any good champion out there can beat Clottey. Just ask Baldomire, Cotto and Margarito. When you compare the styles it really doesn’t take a genious to figure that out. The question is, can Pacquiao K.O. Clottey? This is what Pac needs to do since no one else has done it before. Freddie Roach wants this knock out. I say 6 or 7 round K.O. Clottey is just to passive. This will be a DLH repeat.

  2. SmoovOne Says:

Yet another silly article. What risk? Clottey’s a stiff. Nobody cares about this fight. Mayweather-Mosley has stolen any little thunder this fight had.

This should be a very predictable win for Pacquiao. Mayweather-Mosley is a “highly risky” fight. There just is no hype for Pac-”No Name” Clottey.

Team Pacquiao fucked up and picked a stiff to fight, and Mayweather picked a future Hall of Famer that has true boxing skills.

    It’s all bout Mayweather-Mosley now.

  3. mrRomero Says:

Oh…and one more thing. I’ve watched boxing for years and years. I’m sorry but I just don’t think this fight should be a PPV EVENT. I know that pac brings with him a huge fan base, but against Clottey…come on!

    Roach’s battle plan?

1st, He sets up opposition by tell his insightful opponent weakness, usually the opponent is also aware of their own weakness and now become paranoid because Roach knows it and has an plan in exploiting it. So the opponent will try correct their mistake, giving them the illusion they are ready for Roach and Pacquiao, but Roach knows this and has a counter plan for it.

2nd backup plan, is if the opponent ignores Roach publicity about his fight plan, then Roach will simply execute his original sound and thoughtful plan, with more gusto and there by ensure a victory by Pacquiao.
Notice what he comments on how to defeat mayweather, when in other blogs he praise mayweather style as almost impossible to counter, it’s design to boost mayweather ego so he sticks to his usual style of fighting, in which as mention in this blog, Roach has a perfect counter for. Roach is a great coach because he knows the scientific aspect as well as the streetwise portion of the sport.

    ADDENDUM

REMEMBER mayweather vs castillo fight 1st and 2nd?

floyd should have lost the 1st fight and to many spectator and HBO announcers he did. He lost because floyd did used his usual style of fighting and was ill prepared for castillo. thats why floyd only beat castillo in the rematch because he then had time to change his fight plan. To bad castillo did not have Roach at his side to play mind games and setup floyd. so floyd could be exposed as cherry picking chicken shet, earlier and not when Mosley expose in may 1. watch for floyd to lose in points and get floored by mosley, at which case floyd will run, run, run, run away like a chicken.

  6. Phoocquiao Says:

I like how people now consider Pacquiao as a genuine welterweight. IMO, he’s still a blown-up lightweight that still pretty strong and competitive at the higher weights. He’s not a welter, so i fully expect anyone fighting at that weight to beat Pacquiao. That being said, the fact that he’s beating these guys, shot or not, is very very impressive.

  7. Phoocquiao Says:

Also, does it seem kinda of strange that since there is no 24/7 for this fight, Pac’s camp is suddenly drama free?

  8. blogcosep Says:

Yes, This Manny Pacquiao is truly amazing fighter.

  9. PAC4you-Fan Says:

Nothing is for sure when two fighters meet on ring. Anything can happen. Mind has to be focused not to let it wonder somewhere other wise the only word you can hear from them is “wah happen?”. The beauty of this fight is small guy vs big guy. Pac is proven to be a good puncher and a very skilled one. To KO Clottey is another thing. Then the date is 13 and that number is a “bad” number. Lot of people avoid that number. To prove i am right? look what happened. May-Pac fight set on that date, and you know what? was nothing but trouble and the $40 million ends up like a dust. I will watch it on my Projection Screen along with my friends and a lot of beer, coz i know that that is the bloodiest date of the year.

  10. The Roc Says:

Oliver Suarez are you a member of team Pacquiao? You can’t mention Pacquiao without mentioning PED’s. You know that Oliver. He gets the same treatment as Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire. People when you refuse to take a drug test you are on DRUGS.

  11. Phoocquiao Says:

People when you live and die on baseless assumptions you are an idiot or on drugs or an idiot on drugs.

  12. PAC you Says:

All of these idiots that assumes PAC is on PED likely had 100% cheating wife that they cannot get rid off.

  13. wizzo Says:

well this article is obviously tryin to hype pacman fight but we all know floyd/mosley is more interestin. we all know clottey is not good enough to coz any damage to pacman so i will wait till someone posts it on youtube…i dont mind coz manny is gon annihilate him away

  14. Numba 1 Says:

Idk what all you are saying…I still think it’s an interesting fight and Clottey is the 1 Contender. All his loses were very controversial. He is a very solid dangerous fighter. But then theres Pacquiao…..I guess we still all know whats gonna happen. But hey who knows? There could be a clash of heads forming a cut, or someone could land a huge power shot knocking the other out…..You just never know with boxing.

Mayweather ” picked ” mosely. What a laughable statement. Signed and ready to go rigjt? Unless ofcourse kfc suffers rib injury or this and that. One more thing , i wish this so called radio hosts musters up some balls to ask floyd if his documented use of xylocaine isnt cheating when he avers about cleaning up the sport. Then again its floyd- he would only guest on your show if you dont ask questions!

  17. kiMba Says:

    @mrRomero

Are you kiddin me? You just admitted that pacman brings with him a huge fan base.. so this fans won’t buy PPV tickets? Come on man!

Fans will always be fans, no matter how boring the opponent will be( im not saying clottey is) he’s also a good fighter, but no match with Pac honestly.

    Pac.. Mid-Late rounds referee stoppage

  31. boxingfan Says:

I agree with the poster that said Mayweather-Mosley is the better fight to watch. Team Pacquiao messed up, and now they have to fight a “low risk” figher.

I’ve read a lot of Oliver Suarez’s articles, and it’s clear he’s a Mayweather basher. That last one where you said that Mayweather avoided Mosley and Kostya Tszyu in the past when the fans wanted that fight is total nonsense. Oliver Suarez obviously has insufficient knowledge and boxing IQ since Mayweather DID call out those fighters in 2005, and also De La Hoya in 2005. Margarito wasn’t even known when he wanted to fight Mayweather, and Cotto was just coming up in ranks. Get your facts straight before you post nonfactual information Oliver. Mosley was asked about Mayweather in 2006, and all Mosley could say is that he’s going on vacation and his tooth might be chipped. Here’s your proof Oliver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPJhvYXKZK8 .

Oliver, don’t write articles about boxing when you write things that are false, and you bash other fighters because you are in love with Pacquiao. You’re very amateur, and unprofessional if you are trying to become a writer. Fact: Mayweather picked a high-risk opponent with Mosley, and Pacquiao is stuck with Clottey. Oliver Suarez, your credibility is just going down the toilet when you post stuff like this.

  32. lakersdabest Says:

You can bring all the achievment awards you want on Pacquiao. A real boxing fan who knows the sport looks at them like the employee of the month awards for McDonald’s. Pacquiao is a fake champ. He needs to have more respect for the sport that made him who he is, have integrity and prove he’s not taking PEDs. He cries like a little girl taking people to court, and giving piss poor excuses for avoiding randong (accurate) drug testing).

  34. Vice Says:

Well for your info, Clottey did not lose to Baldomir. Ref KO Clottey or rather disqualify him even when Clottey is well ahead in scoring

  35. mrRomero Says:

Pacquiao and his fans should be ashamed of taking a low risk opponent like the human punching bag named Clottey.

And you guys have the balls to say that Floyd Mayweather Cherry picks. I guarantee you that Pac will fight Margarito Next. I bet my life on it.

1.) Ask the NSAC to ban XYLOCAINE not just 1 week before the fight but all the time.
2.) Ask BOB ARUM to help u in #1.
3.) If #1 is done, agree to Mayweather’s demand for a RANDOM DRUG TEST 14 days before the fight (only if #1 is done).
4.) Fight Mayweather in December so that you can rest your tired body after the may election.
