 Photo by Oliver Suarez The Philippines always had a fondness for boxing, the reason that it has always been a hotbed for talented young boxers. The emergence of Manny Pacquiao as a major star in boxing has only added more talent to its boxing stable by influencing many of the country’s younger generation to participate in the sport.
It can be argued that Philippines is as great a boxing nation as Mexico and Puerto Rico. Mexico and Puerto Rico are only more recognized because before Pacquiao, Filipinos were not given the same opportunities to display their skills at the world stage.
But now the country is slowly gaining respect as more opportunities become available to Filipino boxers because of Pacquiao’s popularity and the magnitude of the Filipino market.
The Philippines now currently has four major title holders with Filipino descent: Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes, Manny Pacquiao, and Rodel Mayol.
Still, it’s still questionable if the success of Philippine boxing can be sustained after Pacquiao. Would promoters and others continue to invest on Filipino boxers after Pacquiao?
It depends if the most influential figures in Philippine boxing has already set a stable foundation to ensure its continued success after the current pound for pound king retires. Did they properly take advantage of all the opportunities provided by Pacquiao’s success?
They certainly had enough time to develop a stable foundation since Pacquiao has been a star of the sport for quite sometime
The truth is they have not because their priorities may not have been in the right place and thus affected the potential success of many Filipino fighters.
The problem is most of the Filipino boxers are not being provided the best chance to win. Success is great but it can lead to greed and questionable decision making.
Ciso Morales is a great example of a fighter of this questionable decision making. Now some are questioning his heart and courage because of his devastating loss to Montiel. But the question that should be put out is if he was given the best chance to win. Morales is a young kid who has not fought any notable opponent, yet was pitted against a world class fighter in Fernando Montiel. Not only that, he had to go down in weight to face him.
If they are not given the best chance to win, then they are destined to only attain mediocre type of success. Those who are responsible for these boxers’ careers must evaluate their priorities. Do they care more about immediate success and make money in the short term or do they care about the long term success of their boxers?
A great example of how to properly prepare a fighter is Andre Ward. For the longest time, his handlers and he were criticized for not facing elite fighters or fighting for a title. It was because his handlers wanted him to be both physically and mentally prepared before he stepped up in competition. Now, he just beat a world class opponent in Kessler and is now considered one of the best young fighters in the game.
Developing young fighters who can contend is a major factor in ensuring the success of Philippine boxing. This doesn’t only include that they are physically and mentally ready, but ensuring that they are provided the right strategies for their fights and choosing the right opponents that can help them prepare for future fights against elite opponents. Constantly pitting them against journeyman fighters to hype up their record only does more harm than good in the long term.
Filipinos are just like any other sports fans, they want winners and if they are constantly provided mediocre products then sooner or later they will stop supporting it.
If that happens, then Philippine boxing might again be on the outside looking in after Pacquiao. Filipino fighters once again will find it difficult to get those opportunities to fight for world titles against notable opponents.
Another factor that must be answered is if many of the Filipino fans who support Pacquiao are truly boxing fans or just fans of the Filipino icon.
It is a question that is still need to be answered. How many Filipinos who are ‘supposedly’ boxing fans know about other boxers such as Eden Sonsona, Marvin Sonsona, Aj Banal etc? The fact is a great number of Filipinos I’ve come across with are not familiar with any of the names mentioned above and only know Pacquiao.
Will they continue to support and have the same passion for the sport even after Pacquiao in order to entice promoters to keep investing on Filipino fighters?
Nonito Donaire Jr. is a great champion who just keeps on winning and it’s a wonder why he has not gotten the support of more Filipino fans. People are quick to judge him for failing to fight notable opponents. Some of that may be due to some fighters’ hesitancy to fight a fighter of Donaire’s caliber, but it’s also because the financial incentives might not be enough for them to face ‘The Filipino Flash.’
Filipinos need to support Donaire to convince promoters that the Filipino market in boxing is not dependent on Pacquiao. In fact, it might be necessary and not an option because if other Filipino fighters are only achieving mediocre success, then the responsibility of keeping the fire burning for Philippine boxing will all fall on Donaire’s shoulders.
So will Philippine boxing continue its current success after Pacquiao retires? Only time will tell.

No the answer is as simple as no, it’s gonna take more than pacquiao to take phillipine boxing as high as the mexican, puerto rican or japanese boxing. pacquiao wouldnt be where he is without steroids and I serously doubt they will allow another cheater like pacquiao in the future, that will change. so you can only dream for phillipino boxing to be as great as the Mexican, japanese, panamenian, argentinan and puerto rican boxing.

I think there has always been good Phillipine boxers but since they fight in the small weight classes they don’t get too much recognition.Im not saying that there are as many as Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. Manny Pacquiao shot to stardom after fighthing at welterweight

Your article is great. I’m a Filipino, but sad to say that millions of filipinos got interested in boxing only because of Pacquiao. They don’t know Banal, Bautista, Mayol, Sonsona, Gorres, Donaire, Nietes, Viloria, Domingo, Concepcion..etc. I’m afraid that after Pacquiao, Filipino boxers will have less impact to the world.

We’ll this is the ugly truth because for me i observed that majority of the Filipinos who follows boxing today are into boxing only because of the success and emergence of Pacquiao alone. They do not follow the young and emerging young fighters like Gesta, Banal, Sonsona and others. Im a Filipino who started to love and follow boxing. Learning the history and events about boxing and maybe its time for all of us to learn to be a Filipino boxing fan, not just a Pacquiao fan. Its not forever that Pacquiao will box. Lets give support and appreciate to our next young Filipino boxing stars like we are showing now to the Pacman in order for the fire to burn more in our hearts and our pride in boxing will light up the world. I’m looking forward to Marvin, Bernabe, Eden, Gerry, Banal, etc. The problem is, (Manny) he set the standard for Filipino boxers which is one of the greats. Like the author said, not having the chance to exhibit their talent overseas is a big problem. It’s more expensive to fly overseas then for Mexican’s etc, to drive over. The flight to the pacific is more expensive than Argentina to US. About $2000 from and back. Nahum you’re an idiot b/c you believe in something with no proof. I too don’t understand why people don’t support their fighters. I support these guys even though I’m not really a “pure” filipino. Here in Hawaii we support all local athletes. I guess we value contact sports more than filipinos. With a standard that Manny made, you’d have to match it to get their attention. I hate to reference it, but it’s like the Jabbawockeez setting the standard for that show. The following seasons didn’t add up. Or Anderson Silva making the BJ Penn seem boring after schooling Forrest. In the future, can you really believe a fighter would be better than Anderson, BJ, GSP and Fedor when they retire? It depends on what we mean by “success”. If by success we mean that the Philippines will continue churning out world champions, then the answer is YES. Philippine boxing will move on after Manny leaves the boxing scene. It will produce great boxing talents, as it always had. However, if by “success” we mean that there would be another Filipino boxing superstar with cross-over appeal in US, Mexico, and all over the world, who is so much well-known to the casual boxing fan as Manny is at the moment, then the answer is: probably not in a long long time yet. Manny Pacquiao is a once-in-a-generation boxing prodigy. He is a phenom, a possible “greatest of all time” boxer. He is the first boxer to win 7 titles in as many weight division. By the time he retires, it is possible he would have won his 8th weight division title. If that’s something easy to do, then somebody else would have done it before. How long will it take before another one comes along to match or surpass that record?

There’s no doubt Paquiao is idolized by many Filipinos. This is mainly because of his achievement. This does not only happened in the sports of boxing. Look at all those superstars in other sports; Woods in golf, Pele in soccer, Jordan in basketball, Roger in tennis , to name a few. They were idolized not only in their native land but all over the world. Paquiao, because of what he has achieved as a boxer.

The reason why after Pacquaio, the Philippine love for boxing will fade is because the Pacman has brought legendary and explosive wins rarely seen, not only in this country but worldwide. His Muhamed Ali/Bruce Lee like qualities given his character and extremely humble down to earth beginnings has contributed to these. The fact is, when the Pacman climbs in the ring all traffic/crime and what have you grind to a halt. What Filipino fighter of this rare caliber can we produce after the Pacman? The answer is we have got to wait for a very very very long time an after that wait some more and only get one if we are lucky. It’s like looking for the perfect pearl or diamond. For all the aspiring Pacmans here is a simple tip. Fight to entertain. Make the audience stand up and shout in suspense and thrill. Don’t act but fight! Let the blood out! Fight as if it was your last fight and give it everything you got. I remember very well when the Pacman was featured in an undercard in the States back in the early days. The commentator said “Watch this kid, remember his name.” I knew right there and there that we’ve hit the mother load.

Manny Pacquiao has proven that you can take Performance Enhancing Drugs and refuse random testing. Since they can be cycled out of your system within 24 hours he can pass any drug screening and no one would be the wiser.
I believe that phillipen boxers are as equally great as any other country. Maybe even more so. But Unless there is a law passed making random drug testing up to 4 hours before a fight, there will be more dishonest boxers like Pacquiao out there….and not just from the phillipenes, from any race in the planet.

You guys who are asking for proof of drug usage. Do you guys have proof that he’s not. Are you guys testing PAC yourselve’s. If not then what makes you so sure that he is not using. Because Bob Arum and Pac say so?
I drank beer This Saturday ( I got fukced Up). If someone took an alcohal test right now it would come up negative. does that mean that I don’t drink beer and never have? I could take everyone to court who accused me of drinking because they can’t prove I drink….So long as I refuse weekend testing.

You are all forgetting something,,, Boxing is a show, a brutal physical show that draws out boxing patrons to spend their money to watch the fighters dismantle each other and the very end, the winners will be the promoters and the boxers themselves as long as they do not incur brain damage that is ^_^. All the festivities and mouthing are just a part of the show to increase the interest of the fans and react to the situations that the prefight elicits. All I can say is; with or without Many Pacquiao Philippine Boxing will continue even if the the fighters are just thrown to the Jap’s, Thais, Ozzies et al. It will be the determination of the individual Filipino fighters to reach his accomplishments plus the fan base that they can gather that will put each and every one of them in the limelight. Always remember this,,,IT IS THE PROMOTERS INTENT TO SEE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE MONEY ALONE …. I just hope that after Manny,, Bob Arum and the rest will still support the other Filipino fighters ^_^

I will continue to watch Filipino boxers. Nonito Donaire is a damn good fighter. And Have seen many more in my life so far. I have no issues with filipinos at all. Good people.
Pacquiao is not a dirty cheat because he’s Filipino. He’s a dirty boxer because that’s what he is. Cheaters represent themselves, Period. I see Pac as a dirty boxer, not a filipino representative.

I don’t have to show you shit Numba 1. People have been saying that Pac was on PED’s before the Mayweather’s did and that’s a fact. Malignagi is another one and so have other boxers that I know. The only thing the Mayweather’s said was he could be on something and they requested the Olymipic style testing if the fight had happened.
SHOW evidence. Why should the people who think pac is on something have to show evidence. We’re not being accused..Pac is. this is not our problem and I don’t have to back up anything I say. If you don’t like, call Paquiao and bitch to him. He’s the one running from accurate testing.

When Manny’s gone, of course! Boxing will continue to the filipino people. There are alot of unheard names like; Nietes, Sonsona, Gesta just to name a few and they’re pretty good fighters too. But Manny who really helped these young filipino fighters to be reckon with. I really believed that once these young fighters becomes more experienced and well seasoned, they will be a tough contender.
