In a recent interview, trainer Jeff Mayweather shared his thoughts on this weekend’s “Welcome to the Future” doubleheader card, featuring Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Marco Antonio Rubio and Nonito Donaire vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. Extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the Sweet Science, Mayweather is impressed with the technical skills of Nonito Donaire; so much so that he doesn’t think Vazquez Jr. has any chance at all to pull off an upset victory. In fact, he fully expects both of the favorites to come out victorious.
“I don’t think it will change. Don’t get me wrong, Rubio has a puncher’s chance and that’s about it, but I don’t think Vazquez has a chance at all. I was never really impressed with him,” Mayweather explained. “But I am impressed with Donaire and I see him winning probably in a fairly easy way and maybe stopping him.” Indeed, it will be impressive if Donaire can stop Vazquez Jr., especially considering that this will be his first foray into the Super Bantamweight division. While Donaire has typically enjoyed a distinct size advantage against his opponents, on Saturday, he will be taking on a man just as big as him. That being said, Donaire will still have the height advantage, which should allow him to, worst case scenario, control the action with his superior boxing skills to win a decision.
